Chasing the bag

Generation check. We gotta get that bag. What is driving our generation to work hard? It is the money or the passion to want to bring about change. As I sit and scroll through Instagram and WhatsApp stories, I see a lot of posts about making money, about being able to afford vacations, drip, iPhones, and everything in between. I see a lot of posts about getting that bag. About giving rich Aunty vibes. Then I ask myself if our generation is all about money. Is money the real goal?

When I was young,  passion and ambition came from the desire to want to impact change and make a difference. But then we all need money to be able to meet our needs and even wants. So the idea of just doing whatever we are passionate about regardless of how much money we make can be a threat to our overall wellbeing being. Eating healthy food, going to the gym, having frequent doctor appointments and therapy all need money. So the bag has got to be chased. But if we are being honest we rarely hear people talk about eating well and going to therapy being the reason they say they want to chase the bag. A lot of the time chasing the bag is associated with being able to afford luxury goods. Luxury clothes, bags, phones, cars, and vacations. And these things can be said to add to a person's well-being because well, it is a good feeling to wear new clothes and to hold a new phone. In reality, we are chasing the bag to only buy more bags. Which means we will always be chasing the bag.

But should this be all? I think that the best case is when we do something we are really passionate about.  Make a difference in the world. This means extending your passion to others. Being a helping hand to someone else other than ourselves. Recognizing that we do not exist just to serve ourselves but to serve others as well. That our purpose is much bigger, it extends beyond our own individuality. We exist as a community and a global society. And our purposes are closely aligned. I think it is possible in all this to be able to afford our needs and even our wants. I believe eventually money comes, if anything it comes sooner and easier when we live in purpose and when we extend ourselves to others. Even bigger and better and more fulfilling is the chasing of our passion, of our purpose which will let the bag chase us instead.

It is important that we are financially stable and I am thrilled by the fact that this generation is determined to make life better for ourselves, to not settle for the bare minimum, and to want to chase after the finer things in life. I think we shouldn't stay accustomed to always being in need and limit ourselves to a certain affordability only. We can and we should, if we want, own nice cars, beautiful homes and wear those beautiful clothes, and yet there is still more we can afford to do. Things that can only be born out of the willingness to impact change which I think is more precious than gold or silver.

Should we continue to chase the bag? By any means Yes. But we should also recognize that there is something bigger that we are created for.

  1. Amazing piece of writing, I truly enjoyed reading it. :)

As an economist, I have always allocated a great importance to chasing the bag. Of all the capitals such as Physical capital, Financial capital, and Human capital, I have realized that Financial capital remains at large the most important one. Regardless of our goals, dreams of making changes, It is paramount to chase the bag first to acquire the other two capitals. After all, you cannot get the best ingeneurs, business experts, medical experts...etc to work on projects for free. They didn't go to school to come do charity/philanthropy and each one of them got bills and/or debts to pay. The better they earn, the happier they are and the better they get the job done.
So, the bag does play a huge role in helping us to get the best human resources needed. As for physical capital; assets cannot be for free. So, once again, the bag plays a huge role in the acquisition of land, equipment and other means of production, goods & service distribution and so on. And of course, being able to live without financial worries is cool, being able to comfortably afford your soft life will add the cherry and cream on top of the cake. Follow your passions, follow your dreams, do what make you happy, but once you secured the bag first, you secured a big percentage of all of them and much more.

    1. This this very thoughtful. Thank you so much for reading and for sharing your insightful. It’s indeed important for us to know that financial capital is very important and that we shouldn’t struggle in life in the name of passion. Also that the other capitals need financial capital for us to acquire them
