Never lose the spirit of dance
Never lose the spirit of dance
You can chain a man's hands but you can never chain his soul.
Never lose the spirit of dance,
We danced in the space of time since.
In those slave plantations we danced,
In the heat wave of apartheid we danced,
Through our independence struggles, we danced
We will dance
We are dancing
We are dance,
We dance at wedding parties, we dance at birthday get-togethers,
We dance at graduation ceremonies, we dance even at funerals as we celebrate the lives of those that once were
We dance at the sound of life being born
I smile at the skills of an African child,
As she turns her waist round and round at a young age,
As the boy moves around the house making all manner of moves
We dance to the sound of the ocean waters and to the raindrops
Under the sunshine and under the moon
We dance under the shadows of a cloudy day
And under the promise of the rainbow
Fine-tunes forming from within
The ancient songs of the old
It came like it was always with us
What really causes us to dance I begin to wonder,
It is the beat?
Is it the music?
And here came a flood of answers from where I believe lies the spirit of our African ancestors
Listen, my child,
It’s not only the body that moves
It is the soul
It is your inheritance
Your heritage
your heart trying to speak
It is music in motion
The element of pride,
Of hope in the face of defeat
And of victory, we’ve won
It can never be killed, it can never be quenched.
Rhythm passed on from generation to generation.
The art wrapped up in the movements
As the body gives in to the beat of freedom
It brightens up a heart
It makes the soul merry.
Who can help but radiantly smile when they see these waves, these moves,
We must indeed conserve this heritage,
Our children must come and find the rhythm,
In the same way we did
Whether are belittled or kept out of the picture,
We must make sure to capture the spirit of dance as it moves through our souls.
All am trying to say is Afro-beats keep the spirit of dance beating
Never lose the spirit of dance
