The present is just as important

Being present

It is easy to stay stuck in the past. Remembering the good old days as we call them, or were they really? Reminiscing on back when. Usually, when I think about the past I think about the good times, the happy times when all went well, but really the past is not perfect. A lot of things happened that I would rather not.

Don't get me wrong, it's okay to look back from time to time and learn from our past achievements and even mistakes but we can't afford to remain stuck there for we risk not moving forward and not realizing how precious today is. Here and now is a blessing, we have breath in our lungs that alone is a gift worth celebrating and worth living for.

And then there is the future which l think about with such a bright mind. I think about how beautiful it will be, how fulfilling and exciting. It's almost as if the future holds no sadness, all is calm and all is bright. I think it's wonderful that I think the future is bright, I should think about it that way and I really do hope and pray the future is calm and bright but I shouldn't be living my life for the future only.

Now is yesterday's future. I dreamt of going to college, I dreamt of the many things and experiences that I have right now but if I don't stop and live in the present, celebrate all the valleys that the good Lord is bringing me through and all the mountains he is placing me on then really the future will never come. It will always be this distant perfect illusion of what I think life should be in order for me to feel like I have lived when in actual fact I am living right now in this moment.

It's okay to make plans, to have hopes and dreams for the future but they shouldn't become the basis of our entire being. We should equally be thankful for today and for what is happening right this second. To love the people around us and the places we are in right now. To feel the warmth of the present and to even embrace the present challenges. There is always so much to be grateful for. I always think of the glass being half full and not half empty.

The present is equally important, if it is hard, it is shaping us to gain the experiences we need to persevere through the storm and it may not look like anything good is going to come out of the hardship but there might be if we allow ourselves to learn and become better even in the challenge. And when all is well, we should remain positioned to learn from the happy experiences.
