What it means to be Educated
Education is a powerful weapon we can use to change the world (Nelson Mandela). To be educated is to have the knowledge necessary to grow as an individual and to use that growth to impact the world in a positive way.
Having knowledge is key to self awareness as well as the awareness of others. Over the last two years, I have taken keen interest in learning about self development. I realized that I paid attention to my intellectual growth so much that I didn't focus on my personal development. It was only until recently when I found out that there are so many books that can help me grow and develop my character. I have been reading books that talk about self confidence, self esteem, characteristics of a good leader and how to be a good friend.
Self development is an important area for me to be educated in and I would like to continue reading books, and having discussions with other people on this topic. The more I can learn about self development the better I will become as a person.
Secondly, being educated means having the knowledge necessary about my passions and career interests. When I was working for book-world I was exposed to a lot of books that talked about economics and politics. I had always thought that I could only learn about these topics through lectures in classrooms, but when I noticed several young people coming to the store to buy politics and economics books, I stopped to ask myself why I would not do the same. One day, I asked a customer, who was in the same age range as me, why they bought a book on Zambian politics, they looked at me and said that it was their duty to educate themselves about Zambian politics as they aspired to be a politician one day. This response changed the way that I take education completely, I realized then that it is my responsibility to educate myself by looking for resources and using those resources to my advantage.
After that interaction, I started reading books during my free time while working for book world. I would read whenever I got to work early and during launch time.
At the end of that month, I bought two books on Zambian politics. After I read those books, I was amazed at how many of my questions were answered. I started to get answers to the questions I often battled with, questions like; why Zambia is a poor country and what is needed to make Zambia prosper. It was then when I decided that I was going to make sure to gain the knowledge on all the topics that sparked my curiosity. Every time I got paid, I bought a book on politics and economics. I also downloaded an app which I started using to read about self development.
This to me is what it means to be Educated, to search for resources and to use those resources to enrich oneself with knowledge which is a driver for skill acquisition and expertise.
